The dragons of Scotland are diverse in their appearances but are very closely associated with water. Some ore of the sea perpent persuasion, dwelling within the lochs and burns of this wild but beautiful country.
Dragon of Deerhurst
This poisonous, cattle devouring creature was said to be a serpent of immense proportions. The king grew weary of the dragon's attacks upon man and beast and offered the estate of Walton Hill to any that could defeat the dragon. A local peasant took up his ax and traveled to where the dragon lived and finding the monster asleep he proceeded to chop off it's head.
Dragon of Dundee
In the Dronley Burn, a marker sits, called the Martin Stone it depicts a man on a horse attacking a serpent with a spear. The legend behind this stone is that a dragon near Dundee had devoured all nine of a farmer's daughters. A young man by the name of Martin undertook the quest to slay the dragon in a moment of grief at the loss of his love. He killed the beast in a place known today as Baldagon and the stone still sits to tell of his encounter with a monster.
Stoor Worms
Large aquatic creatures that loved young virgin flesh usually between ten and thirty feet long and living in or near running water.
There are many sightings of creatures in the lochs and lakes of Scotland. Some believe them to be lost remnants of the dinosaur age, others thing they maybe large snakes, still others believe that perhaps these loch monsters are actually dragons that live deep within the lochs themselves, sleeping in large underwater caves.
Loch Ness Monster
Stronsay Beast
Fifty five feet in length with a neck that was ten feet 3 inches long, 3 pairs of legs, the head of a sheep, large round eyes, rough grey skin that was elasticy and thick, a man of bristly hair from shoulder to tail that glowed like silver fire in the dark. A beast of nightmares? Perhaps but this is what washed up on the shores of Rothiesholm Head in September of 1808.
Morag
A creature living in Loch Morar, described by some as being a dinaosaur like creature or having the description of the fae creature the kelpie or water horse.
Mester Stoor Worm
This wyrm was considered one of the nine curses of mankind. It had poisonous breath and immense size as well as a great appetite for virgins. Whenever the dragon lay his head near a village or city it was expected to feed the beast with 7 virgins. Appearing near Orkney, a wizard of the kingdom told the king that he must feed his daughter to the beast and then it would go away.
The king asked for a hero to come and slay the great monster but no one came. On the last day a mere peasant, a farm boy appeared and undertook the quest.
Young Assipattle was a lazy young lad who had grand notions of being a hero and had no fear of the dragon. As the beast lay sleeping the young man carried a bucket of smoldering peat into the dragons maw as he yawned. He traveled through it's body to its liver and shoved the hot peat moss inside and then returned by the same path and out of the dragon.
The dragon began thrashing about in mortal agony, it's lashing tongue fell hard upon the earth and created the depression which became the Baltic Sea, it deadly fangs fell from it's mouth in an ear shattering roar and created the Orkney Islands, the Shetland Islands and the Faroe Islands. Finally after it died it's entire body became the land of Iceland.

In a land so immersed in magic and folklore it is no surprise to find dragons living in the wild and untamable lands of Scotland. In a land torn by war and strife it seems the dragons have faded from every day life but occasionally show up to remind us that they do indeed exist. Perhaps they mourn the losses their country has sustained, perhaps they keep watch over the people and the land as silent observers, merely showing themselves when the strong hearted people of Scotland forget to believe in the magic that is the heart of the Scotland.
