was reportedly seen by several people in a field near Flatwoods, Braxton County, on September 12, 1952, and has since become etched in local lore.
Flatwoods Monster
In September of 1952 West Virginia was exposed to one of the most unusual occurances it had ever seen. Known for it's unusual supernatural experiances from the Mothman to various hauntings, West Virginia has also had what can only be explained as an Extra Terrestrial encounter.
September 12, 1952 Sheriff Carr and Deputy Long received a report of a strange fiery object falling to earth. The report was cooborated by several school students who witnessed the object falling but the events that were to make the town famous had yet to occur.
Other witnesses who saw the object fall were four boys, who decided in a moment of adventure to find out just what it was that had fallen. They set off with Kathleen May and her two sons and so the seven of them made their way through the trees and up the hill. What they found was unlike anything they or anyone else had ever seen before.

Seeing as how the sun had set the darkness settled about them and in the distance, two red lights guided them towards the object. As they drew closer they made the object out to be a spherical like object with a diameter of 10 feet. As one of the party directed his flashlight towards the lights they made a shocking discovery. They were not just mere lights, they were eyes.
The eye witnesses decribed the creature as having a bright red face, bright green clothing, a head resembling the ace of spades, and clothing which from the waist down, hung in great folds. The creature, realizing that it was being observed moved in the direction of those that had spied it's unusual appearance and began to move towards them. Making a quick decision the seven of them beat a hasty retreat.
Mrs. May called Sheriff Carr while the four boys immediately called their friends to report what they had seen. Later on that night the original group of adventurers, the sheriff, the kids' friend and a group of locals once more ascended the hill to verify the reports. The only thing that they found upon their return was a peculiar smell that hung thickly in the air, but the sphere and the alien were nowhere to be found.
Upon further investigation the following day "two parallel skidmarks and a circle of flattened grass" were located but authorities explained it away as being a meteor or a comet that had fallen to earth. But was it a comet or a meteor? For even a small piece of meteor would have left more signs that a circle of flat grass and some skid marks. And what of the creature? What could the children and the woman have seen that stood ten feet tall and had a red face?
The following night more sightings were reported. A mother and her daughter reported seeing the unusual creature many miles from the first sighting. Another report was made of a large orange object hovering over Flatwoods. Another report came in of a sighting of both the creature and the unusual objects that were hovering over Flatwoods.
The authorities never pursued a further investigation and although the event occured over 50 years ago the residents of Flatwood still recall the strange events of that evening. Flatwood itself is now known as Home of the Green Monster, and in September of 2002 a festival was recently held to commemorate the event.
The mystery surrounding Flatwood was never solved but the residents of Flatwood make sure that they and their visitor never forget.
