Cryptozoology
What is Cryptozoology?
The term first appeared in 1959, in a dedication from Lucien Blancou in his new book. The dedication read "To: Bernard Heuvalmans, master of cryptozoology." The term had been used earlier by Heuvalmans himself in correspondace with collegues but he had not included it in his book "On the Track of Unknown Animals, although at it's publication the sensation that is cryptozoology took hold. At the birth of this new discipline Heuvalman began to pursue cryptozoology as a science and to today, scientists are still not sure if it is a science or merely a hobby. Still the term cryptozoology has become popular in the study of unknown and hidden animals and is recognized for what it is.
But, what is cryptozoology? Some insist that it is an occult term for creatures of fantasy and myth. Yet the word fuses three important greek words, which convey it's true meaning. Kryptos, zoon, and logos which translates into the study of hidden animals. Some say these animals are unknown and mythical, but to the people who have reported these creatures, they are not unknown, and certainly not myths. True some reports of these hidden and mysterious animals comes from remote populations of people who live by superstitions and magick but their eyes are reliable for details and some have proven invaluable in finding and proving the existence of these hidden animals.
To most people cryptozoology brings to mind the study of such creatures as the Sasquatch, the yeti, and the Loch Ness Monster, but these are just a few of the truly mysterious creatures that elude scientists and tantalize researchers. Known by scientists as cryptids, these other creatures range from mysterious spotted lions, to amphibious cats, and as each new animal is discovered and labeled the world of cryptozoology becomes more plausible.
Some of the most interesting creatures have had their existence discovered by disbelievers. The giant panda of Tibet was often cited as an example of a large animal that could remain so elusive, other discoveries have been the Okapi, also known as the zebra crossed with an antelope, the giant squid, the tapir, the Komodo Dragon and the ultimate "living fossil," the coelacanth which was discovered in 1938.
Today Cryptozoology is all around us, from television shows to the internet and even in the video and computer games that now flood the market. Some popular sci-fi shows such as X-Files has delved into the depths of lake monsters and while they may have come up with a logical explanation, they missed the true beast that lived in the lake. Such is the way with most cryptozoologists. While there may be a logical explanation for what is seen, sometimes you have to look a little deeper to find the truth.
Welcome to Cryptozoology.
