Zombies
When people think of zombies the image of stumbling re-animated dead people, oozing viscous fluids and craving human flesh comes to mind. But what is a zombie? Most of the zombies that we know and love come from horror flicks and B movies.
George A. Romero forever immortalized the zombie in his Night of the Living Dead Trilogy, but since that time they have evolved into very complex creatures. The Hollywood zombie and it's origins are diverse and leads to the innate fear that the living have for the dead.
The second type of zombie is one created through witchcraft and magic, specifically Voodoo. The black arts of Haiti are known to turn people into zombies to work as slaves for their sorcerers masters and mistresses. It is the dread of the Haitian people, to lose control of their bodies and be at the command of others. Perhaps this fate is more horrifying than simply being re-animated after death.
While there are many different types of zombies and many reasons for their creation all zombies seem to hold a morbid fascination for the living. Whether it is fear of becoming a zombie or fear of being killed by a zombie. For although we know that zombies aren't real even the most stout of heart will walk carefully through the cemetery and pray that the dead stay in their graves.
