I used to think that my brother was bragging me up as the greatest comedienne, until I finally realized that "funny" to him really meant "QUEER ". It certainly puts a new slant on... "This is my sister. Just to let you know, she's funny."
He had often asked me if I had met other "funny" women like myself yet, so now that I know what he really meant, I have to modify my answer. Seen them? Yes. By the hundreds. Met them? Not until recently. I was always in awe of the clubs that welcomed newcomers into their community. If only there were such a thing for lesbians, I always thought. Well guess what? Now there is! Whether you're newly out, or have been out since the dinosaurs roamed the earth, the lesbian welcome wagon is finally here.
Out And About Womyn (OAAW) is a Halifax-based social group for womyn who love womyn. With a current membership of almost 60, aged 19 to 50+, they've been able to sustain the joyous spirit that the group was based upon. As refreshing as hot apple cider on a cool, crisp night, the hospitality that Maritimers are famous for is magnified (is that even possible?) when you meet up with this bunch.
OAAW is purely a social group. it is neither a support group nor a forum for political debates, heated discussions or personal agendas. With no affiliation to any other groups, OAAW's mandate is simply to organize and or publicize events for womyn-loving womyn so that they may meet and socialize in a safe, comfortable and pleasant atmosphere.
So far, regular on-going events of Out And About Womyn include weekly coffee and chat, a monthly movie and playing pool. This summer, OAAW members attended the 1st annual "Lesbian Come-Out Camp-Out" at the "Mermaid and the Cow" (the only lesbian owned campground in the Maritimes - and a fantastic one at that) and held other camping weekends at Porter's Lake. They've also had picnics, barbeques, parties, gone bowling, golfing, canoeing and even learn-to-play-or-improve-guitar workshops. They've replaced the stress of attending womyn's dances alone with the camaraderie of attending them together.
Upcoming activities include attending the Mermaid and the Cow's labour day weekend Queer Kitchen Party and Cabaret camping extravaganza, the womyn s dance at the Halifax Civic Workers' Club on Sept 28th, a night out at the drive-in theatre, horse-back riding and a Halloween Murder Mystery evening, just to name a few. Interest has also been expressed in forming a softball team for next year.
All members of Out And About Womyn are encouraged to suggest or plan events they would enjoy, and activities/events are varied to accommodate diverse levels of physical ability and time schedules.
Although anyone can access OAAW's public events page on their website (which lists social functions open to the general queer public), only members can access their private calendar of events and various online databases - one of which includes an impressive, detailed list of over 250 lesbian-content movies.
Although based in Halifax, OAAW welcomes womyn who come to Halifax on a regular basis, or are planning to move here. There is no cost to join, and transportation can usually be provided for those without vehicles when an event is not centrally located.
